The Lady Nelson sailing ship

HM Brig The Lady Nelson 5

John Murray was appointed captain of the Lady Nelson officially on September 3, 1801 and his first voyage as commander was to Norfolk Island. The Lady Nelson left Port Jackson on October 2, 1801 and met the Porpoise coming into the Heads. They sailed and the next day the winds were fresh and clear and later in the day shifted to the north-west with light rain and lightning and thunder. On Sunday they encountered intermittent heavy squalls and heavy seas. Being Sunday the ships crew were mustered and read the Articles of War.

On Monday the Lady Nelson had more heavy squalls, rain, and big seas, then sighted Lord Howe Island to the north-east about 16 leagues away. They spot Ball's Pyramid and stand off from NOrfolk for a couple of days. They fire the gun for the pilot to come aboard but the seas are so bad that they assume that they cannot land at Sydney Bay, they make for Cascade and fire a gun when they get there and the pilot, John Drummond, comes aboard. They land the surveyors and later receive news that they can land at Sydney Bay now. They return to Sydney Bay and unload the cargo that they are supposed to.

On Saturday 10 October they sailed to Phillip's Island and offload the officer's baggage. The weather turns bad again and they run into Hunson's Bay and the next day sail to Sydney Bay. They load cargo back and forth between here and Cascade Bay. There was a tremendous amount of sailing to and fro in Norfolk Island. I think it was a bad idea to put a colony there as there was no suitable harbour and loading and unloading cargo was a nightmare. They sight a ship, the Earl Cornwallis from Sydney. They finally get out of that hell hole and make it back to the south head of Broken Bay on Tuesday 27th October.
