Tall Ship R. Tucker Thomson

The tall ship R. Tucker Thomson is a gaff-rigged square topsail schooner with three quarter course and was built by Todd Thompson and Russel Harris at Whangarei and Mangawhai Heads, New Zealand in 1985. The length over all of the R. Tucker Thomson is 25.9 meters and she has a beam of 4.9 meters. The draught of the R. Tucker Thomson is 2.6 meters and she has a mast height of 19.8 meters, with a sail area of 307 square meters. The R. Tucker Thomson's displacement is 55.9 tonnes and the gross tonnage is 44.7 tonnes. Nett tonnage is 33.5 tonnes.

The R. Tucker Thomson is a modern tall ship with a welded steel hull. She has four watertight bulkheads with steel plate decks. The masts, yards, and spars are made of laminated Oregon pine. The R. Tucker Thomson starred in the television series "Adventur" in the Bay of Islands and then sailed to England in 1986 across the South Pacific to Panama to rendezvous with the Second First Fleet Re-enactment voyage to Australia from England.

The R. Tucker Thomson is a working replica of a Halibut Schooner and operates out of Opua in the Bay of Islands. Her deck is sealed with pitch(or tar) which is a very traditional method of caulking the deck. The R. Tucker Thomson usually has a crew of fifteen and can carry forty five passengers on day charters. Below decks there are two double cabins, the Masters cabin at the aft end and the Owner's cabin which is for'ard. You can go on a day sail on the R. Tucker Thomson or a longer voyage like a coastal passage, or even an historic trip(such as the second first fleet re-enactment voyage) or even a magnificent ocean crossing.
