Soren Larsen

The Soren Larsen was the flagship of the first fleet re-enactment voyage in 1988 for the two hundred year anniversary of the first fleet voyage. The Soren Larsen was built by Soren Larsen and Sons in Nykobing Denmark in 1949. The Soren Larsen flies under a British Flag and its rig is late nineteenth century brigantine. The length of the Soren Larsen is 42.7 meters and has a beam of 7.8 meters. The draught of the Soren Larsen is 3.2 meters and has a mast height of 30.5 meters with a sail area of 627 square meters. The displacement of the Soren Larsen is three hundred tonnes and its gross tonnage is 128 tonnes with a nett tonnage of 87.7 tonnes.

The Soren Larsen is a traditional carvel ship of oak and beech. The hull is 75 millimeter oak outer planking on double 175 millimeter oak frames with a 60 millimeter oak inner planking. The Soren Larsen worked as a Baltic trader until 1972. She was bought in 1978 and completely refitted with new decks of iroko hardwood, and rigged as a late nineteenth century brigantine with Douglas Fir masts, yards, and spars. The Soren Larsen starred in the Onedin LIne television series as well as the French Lieutenant's Woman, In Search of the Marie Celeste, and in the BBC television series Shackleton.

From 1982 to 1985 the Soren Larsen trained people in sailing. The Soren Larsen was chartered for the Fist Fleet Re-enactment voyage and refitted in Colchester for the voyage to Australia. The Soren Larsen served as the flagship of the first fleet re-enactment fleet.
