Model Yacht

The 30 inch model Yacht is an exciting model yacht to build. Although this model is 6 inches longer, it is quite a little narrower. Five moulds should be made,. This size makes a good model for an eighth grade boy and can be finished off more like a real yacht. A block of white pine 3 inches by 7 inches by 31 inches free from knots and checks is required. Lay of the deck plan in the same manner as was done in making the sharpie. Save the pieces cut from the sides in order that they may be used in making the cradle. The keel is very easily made from a piece of 18 or 20 gauge sheet brass or galvanized iron, 7 inches wide and 10 inches long. The mast step is about like the one used on the 24 inch model. The rudder is quite a little larger and hangs deeper into the water. This is thought to be necessary, when sailing before the wind and where the sheet is way off.

The mast is rather tall but the author has worked out two sets of sails, one the ''Marconi'' rig, and the other the "Boom and "Gaff" or "lugg" sail. The tall mast is necessary in the just mentioned, in order to get the sail needed to propel the craft at a fair rate of speed. The boom is very similar to the mast, except that it is smaller, and it has a small brass screw eye in the large end. This fits into one fastened into the mast, just above the metal strut or step, which is screwed to the deck. The steering arrangements is a little different from the one mentioned on the 24 inch model. The tiller in this case is a piece of sheet brass, about 14 inch wide.

A 1/4 inch hole is bored in the middle, and a 3/16 inch hole is bored in one end. A half turn is made just beyond the 1/8 inch hole and small nicks are filed into the edges of the remaining part, about 1/4 inch apart. A little sleeve is made to fit over this end and to slide along the above mentioned slots. Take a piece 1/4 inch brass tubing about 1/2 inch long and hammer it flat, so that it will slide over the end of the tiller. A small brass ring or one of the small brass screw eyes is soldered to the slide for the sheet to pass through. Figs. 39 and 40 show some of the details described in the foregoing.

The top of the rudder port can be either the diamond shape or it may be made as suggested by the dotted lines. The travellers are made of 20 gauge tempered brass wire. One-half inch is bent over on each end and hammered eat, so that they can be driven into the deck. A stand for this boat has not been described because the author thinks the one used for the sharpie can be used for this model just as well. It is suggested, how- ever, that the base of the stand be made 12 inches instead of 10 inches long. This boat looks well when stained mahogany with a green bottom. A small pin stripe between the water line and the sides will help the appearance. The deck looks best varnished in the natural color.
