The Making of a 36 Inch Model Yacht Part 2

After the sheer has been made and the deck beams properly placed, the painting of the yacht's inside should be done. Two good heavy coats of any kind Of model boat paint will be required. This is done to prevent the water from soaking through and causing the boat hull to become water soaked and heavy. The under side of the deck (1/8 inch whitewood) should be treated in the same manner after both are dry. Nail the boat deck on with half inch No. 20 brads. Then the hull and deck can be sandpapered with No. 1/2 or No. 0 sandpaper until perfectly smooth, after which apply the just coat of the outside finish, which may be black, steel gray, or white, all colors being flat.

A water line of red or green will go well with any of the above mentioned colors. About two thin coats Of each color will be necessary, sanding between each coat, and finishing with two coats of Valspar varnish. Finish the deck in the natural color by applying one or two coats of white shellac, followed by a coat of Valspar varnish which, because it is an exterior varnish, will not turn white or rub off. The lead weight for the keel should be cast and fastened to the hull after the first coat of paint. A sketch of a mould for the lead keel would outline the place to put it. It is made by taking two pieces of white pine half inch by 5 inches by 10 inches. Cut the shape that is desired for the keel in the 1 inch piece. This is done with a band saw or turning saw. Nail the half inch pieces on either side, allowing a channel to pour the melted lead. Clamp the mould or nail it to a board at the appropriate place. Melt the lead in an old pan of some sort. Care should be taken not to get the metal too hot, for if it is nearly red hot, it will burn the wood and make a rough casting. After the metal has been poured and allowed to cool off for ten or fifteen minutes, take the mould off and clean the rough parts of the keel with a file. Three holes are then bored through it with a No. 12 drill, and followed up with a 3/8 drill. The first goes all the way through, but the second goes within about 3/4 inch. This will allow the screw heads to pass through.
