The Making of a 36 Inch Model Yacht Part 3

Two inch screws are used in fastening this to the wooden portion of the yacht's keel. After the screws have been tightened up, melt a little lead and pour in the holes, or they may be filled with putty, so that, should occasion require, the screws could more easily be reached. The boat steering arrangement is the same as in the 30 inch model and it will therefore not be necessary to describe it again.

One of the features of this boat model is the arrangement for sliding backward or forward, until the rigging is properly balanced. This slide is made by taking a piece of 20 gauge sheet brass, 4 inches long and 2 inches wide, and bending 1/4 inch over on each edge. To make the slide, the metal may be bent around the tongue of a carpenter's square or the blade of a try square. The groove thus formed will allow the regular boat mast strut to slide back and forth. Several holes are drilled in the mast to the slide to fasten it to the deck.

The boat mast step or strut is made by filing a piece of sheet brass (gauge 20) 11/4 inches square, and soldering it to a piece of 5/8 inch brass tubing about 11/2 inches long. The soldering is done by taking a little soldering paste and rubbing it on the brass plate and on one end of the tube. Cut off about 1/2 inch of half round solder wire. Place the tube upright on the plate, drop the solder inside, and hold over a gasoline torch or gas flame until the solder melts and fastens the tube to the plate. Make it from a piece plate that the boat keel makes with the hull.

The rudder port or tubing for the rudder post to pass through the hull is made a piece of 3/16 inch tubing about 5 inches long, soldered to a diamond shaped of sheet brass 1/12 inches long and 1 inch wide. The tubing passes through the about 3/16 inch and is soldered on an angle, corresponding to the angle which model BOAT BUILDING The rudder can be made in almost any shape. Those shown in the boat are merely suggestions, and were used in this model yacht building article because they proved to be so well balanced on the boats built so far. The post is made of 1/8 inch brass rod and the rudder blade of galvanized sheet iron. The post is soldered to the blade, and the tiller is fastened to the post in the same manner as that in a 24 inch yacht model.
