Making a Model Sailing Boat

The first thing that you do when you are intending to make a model sailing boat for your own leisure and fun is to make sure that you go out and get the timber that will be required for the base. You will need two pieces, each 3/4 inch by 3 inches by 6 inches and they are required for the two end pieces, and there will be two pieces of 3/8 inch dowel rod, 4 inches long. These dowels are necessary for the two braces at the top of the boat model. The two upright pieces are fastened to the base by means of two 13/4 inch No. 9 flat head screws. This is not done, however, until places that are allowed for on the boat model have been made for the lead weight and keel on the model boat.

Next thing to do when making the model boat is to measure down 4 inches on the center line of the upright and bore a hole with a No. 12 or 14 auger bit, then measure back 3/4 inch and bore another hole. Take a wood rasp and finish shaping the hole. Then saw from the top to this hole with a double hacksaw or rip saw. Make the saw mark at least 1/8 inch wide, or it will scratch the paint from the keel when placing it in the stand. Next stage in the model boat building process is to bore two holes with a No. 6 auger bit half way through the ends, about 1 inch from the top and about 3/8 inch from the sides of the model boat. Make a bevel around these two blocks with a plane or spokeshave. Glue the two dowels into the holes, and place the whole in the bench vise to dry. lf placed upside down, the base can be screwed on while the glue is drying. The position on the model boat layout would give a good idea of how the finished stand will appear. Finish the model boat timber framing with sandpaper and shellac, or varnish after stain has been applied. The natural wood, however, looks very well, merely varnished with Valspar.
