Build a Small Row-boat

To build a small rowing boat, get your plans from the internet and begin by building a simple strong-back jig from ordinary construction lumber. You can also build the ribs from simple construction timber and set them up on the strong-back jig. Notch the frames to accept the lengthwise planks. The keelson is placed in the center and the chine logs are along the edges. Then add the shear clamp along the top edges of the frames.

Cut out the plywood side planking a little bit over-size, then epoxy and attach to the frames. Then attach the bottom planking by the same process. Fill the seams and apply epoxy fiberglass matting to the joins of the plywood sections in order to seal them all up. Apply two layers of six ounce fiberglass cloth to the hull to fully cover the sides and the bottom of the boat.

Now flip the boat over when the fiberglass has cured. Apply epoxy resin to the inside of the hull. This helps to seal, strengthen and protect the boat. Add some of the inside structure such as the seats, the decking and the rub-rail. Follow all this work up with a good coat of paint and add accessories like the oar-locks, cleats and all the other little details that go into finishing off a boat. You can make a small rowing boat at home in your garage.
