How to Build a Boat at Home

One way to learn how to build a boat at home is to start with the restoration of an old boat that you acquire cheaply. You can learn the skills that you will need later on when you start from scratch and not wreck anything while you are learning.

When you are ready to start building your own boat at home, start with a very simple design for your first boat building project. Begin by building the ribs. You can use plain old construction grade lumber and just butt join them together with epoxy and screws. Now put the ribs on a strongback rig. This is a very simple stand that holds them up and positions them correctly in order to build the boat. Attach a piece of timber called a keelson to the frames. The keelson will fit into slots that you have cut into the frames.

Now, notch the frames and place a length of timber along the top and bottoms of the sides of the frames. The bottom piece of timber is called the shear clamp and the top one is called the chine log. These timbers go into slots you have cut in the frames and they are glued with epoxy and screwed into place. Now the boat is what is called faired. The frame and clamps are planed smooth so that the plywood sheets will have a nice smooth surface to lay on.

Plywood is then layed against the frame and cut out a bit oversized. Then attach the plywood to the framework and trim the plywood to meet the frames. You can then cover the plywood with fiberglass which protects the timber from water-logging and damage. Then turn the boat over and start working on the inside. Put a coat of paint on it, add oar-locks, cleats and motor brackets.
