Blue At the Mizzen by Patrick O'Brian
Blue at the Mizzen by Patrick O'Brian starts with Jack Aubrey and Stephen Maturin leaving Gibraltar and taking a course South-west by west to Madeira. They have a crash and have to turn back to Gibraltar to make repairs. Jack Aubrey's plan is to go to Funchal shipyards on Madeira to make repairs that will get the Surprise under way, then head for Seppings Shipyard in Poole and thence to Chile with a full complement of crew aboard. They are bundled off from Gibraltar on a sweet breeze that moved between west-north-west and north-north-west. Off Rabat in Morocco they buy some fish and then make Funchal. Stephen goes to London in the Ringle and Jack takes the Surprise back to Portsmouth.
England to the Pacific Ocean
The Surprise leaves Portsmouth heading South by west. They drop back into Funchal, take on water and supplies, then sailed east of south for Freetown in Sierra Leone so that Stephen can court Christine Woods. After Freetown, they make Rio di Janeiro, then sail for the River Plate and Buenos Aires. They pass the Cape of the Eleven Thousand Virgins(Cape Virgins) at the east end of the Magellan Strait and go through the strait le Maire, between the end of the South American continent and Staten Island. They sail on the lee side of the many islands , through the Wigwam Reach, past Cape Pilar(or Cape Deseado on another Desolation Island??) at the western end of the Magellan Strait, and into the Pacific Ocean.
Chile
They make for a small sheltered port called Pillon(fictional?) to get stores. They then call in at San Patricio(fictional ?). The Surprise lies off Chiloe Island and Stephen heads for Santiago. The Surprise then sails into Valparaiso. Jack Aubrey then hatches a plan to attack Valdivia harbour and goes to have a look at the layout with senor O'Higgins. They go back to Valparaiso, get their forces ready and then sail back past Concepcion, Cape Corcovado and attack Valdivia.
They return to Valparaiso, Jack hatches another plan and attacks Callao harbor to cut out the Esmerelda. After that action, the Surprise goes to the Chiloe Archipelago to train the nascent Chilean Navy. While there he receives orders to go to the River Plate to join the South African Squadron. Jack sets sail for Cape Pilar and Magellans Straits.
