The Hundred Days by Patrick O'Brian

The Hundred Days by Patrick O'Brian starts off with Jack Aubrey and Stephen Maturin sailing into Gibraltar with his fleet from Madeira. The fleet consists of the Briseis, Surprise, the flagship Pomone, Dover, Ganymede. Jack is given the job by Admiral Keith to look for French ships being built in the Adriatic Sea. They set off in the Surprise to Tangiers under courses and full topsails, the wind in the larboard quarter doing twelve knots, in order to catch corsairs. The Surprise goes back to Gibraltar, then a west-north-wester gale blows them to Port Mahon in Minorca to refit at a rate of ten knots.

The Surprise passes Alboran Island, round Ayre Island, make for Cape Mola and sail into the narrow entrance to Port Mahon. Jack Aubrey then heads for Malta with the wind on the starboard quarter. A few days later they meet Captain Christy-Palliere who tells him about the French ships in the Adriatic, so Jack Aubrey decides to sail to Durazzo(present day Durres, Albania). They stop at Castelnuovo on the norther tip of the Bocche di Cattaro(present day Herceg Novi on the Gulf of Kotor in Montenegro). They then go the fictional port of Rugusa Vecchio. They then sail toward Spalato(Split in Croatia) pass the island of Lesina(Hvar) on their starboard beam and through the narrow channel between Brazza(Hvar) and Solta Islands.

Once they have done their work in Spalato, Jack Aubrey and Stephen Maturin intend to sail for Durazzo, then look for a treasure galley between Pantelleria(an island south of Sicily) and Kelibia in Tunisia, and thence to Algiers. So , from Spalato they sail past the island of Lissa(Vis), see fires on the peninsula of Sabioncello(Peljesac) and the island of Meleda(Mljet). They stand out from Durazzo, then sail past Cape Santa Maria di Leuca(the heel of Italy), then are buffeted by the Levanter wind in the Ionian Sea and fly along at fourteen knots until they make the island of Pantellaria, then sail for Cape Bon the north east tip of Tunisia.

Then Jack Aubrey and Stephen Maturin sail for the Bay of Algiers in the Surprise where Stephen Maturin goes lion-hunting in the fictional area of Shatt el Khadna is the Atlas Mountains with the dey of algiers. Stephen Maturin learns that the treasure galley is to sail from Arzila(Asilah on the Atlantic coast of Northern Morocco) through the straits of Gibraltar. Jack Aubrey is blown back to Port Mahon by a horrific wind, and Stephen goes back to Mahon on the Ringle.

Jack Aubrey and Stephen Maturin then sail for Tarifa in Spain to intercept the treasure galley, passing Punta Carnero, Punta Secreta, Punta del Fraile and Punta Acebuche. They chase the galley west to the Fictional Island of Crac, or Fortnight Island and then disembark their prisoners at Ras Uferni(fictional?) in Morocco, then sail back to Gibraltar. Finally we see Jack Aubrey and Stephen Maturin sailing for South America to fulfill their original mission that they were on at the end of The Yellow Admiral.
