The Yellow Admiral by Patrick O'Brian

The Yellow Admiral by Patrick O'Brian is set on the blockade of Brest. The setting out point for the squadron is Torbay which was filled with shipping such as sloops, cutters, liberty-boats, ships of the line, frigates, and Brixham trawlers. Jack Aubrey and Stephen Maturin in the Bellona sail round Berry Head, and set a course for Ushant making about thirteen knots. They cross the English Channel and sail through Fromveur Passage, keeping out in forty fathoms of water and go east towards the island of Molene on the larboard beam. They go a little south , skirt Green Rock, go four miles to Black Rock, and then they can look into the long channel into Brest Harbour.

The other ships on the Brest blockade in The Yellow Admiral are the Ramillies, Jack's Bellona, Queen Charlotte(the flagship commanded by vice-admiral Lord Stanraer), Zealous. These ships all have seventy-four guns, except for the Queen Charlotte which has 104 guns. Naiad and Doris are frigates standing in for the Alexandria, a twelve-pounder. Jack Aubrey is sent inshore to patrol. The pass through the Raz de Sein, then sail for Dead Man's Bay and the Pointe du Raz. The admiral will be offshore west of Ushant. Jack puts Stephen off at Dog-Leg Cove to row to the beach for some intelligence work. Meanwhile Jack has to sail back offshore to meet the admiral off Ushant.

The next thing in The Yellow Admiral is that Jack has a run in with a French privateer, has his helm shot away and has to go to Cawsand Bay for repairs. When Jack Aubrey comes back to the Brest blockade he is sent to the inshore squadron again and is given orders to survey the reefs around Brest. The war ends and they go back to England, the Surprise is fitted out for a trip to South America and sails off past St Alban's Head. They steer south-south-west at eight knots to go past Cape La Hague. The north-east top-gallant breeze speeds them along at seven to ten knots every day until they reach Funchal harbour in Madeira. Funchal is a bay full of shipping with a small fort on a rocky island. The white-washed town is behind the harbor, then vineyards and sugar cane fields , then mountains. The Yellow Admiral ends with some shocking news that will interrup their travel plans.
