The Royal Clipper

Star Clippers have released plans to build their most expensive and biggest sailing vessel ever constructed. The huge new Ship will be five hundred and eighteen feet (157 meters) long. The ship will be 61 foot at the beam with a twenty foot draft. That will make her forty eight percent larger than the Lions Clipper, which currently holds the title of world's largest sailing ship. But even though the new ship will be much larger, it will only take thirty percent more passengers. That will make a complement of two hundred and ninety six guests and one hundred and forty crew members.

The new ship will be pushed along with thirty seven sails with a total of more than sixty thousand square feet of sail surface area spread out over five masts. Facilities on the ship will include a two level dining room that can feed the whole ship's complement at one sitting. There is also a retractable marina on the stern of the ship. The ship will be so big that it will contain three swimming pools and one of the pools will have a glass bottom.

The Royal Clipper was inspired by the 1902 sailing ship, the Preussen. The Preussen was the largest and fastest sailing ship of its time and dominated the seas, but only for a very few short years. The Royal Clipper has five masts and forty two sails. She has a tonnage of five thousand tonnes and a length of four hundred and thirty nine feet. Her beam is fifty four feet and has a draft of eighteen point five feet. The mast height is one hundred and ninety seven feet.
